What Happened at Our State Legislature in 2010?During the 2010 Legislative Session, NARAL Pro-Choice Connecticut worked in coalition with a number of organizations to promote the reproductive health of Connecticut’s women and girls. We also monitored the state budget process to ensure that vital reproductive health services remained intact. NARAL Pro-Choice Connecticut has been working with the Healthy Teens Coalition on legislation to bring comprehensive sex education to Connecticut Schools. This year, we focused our coalition efforts on enacting a state graduation requirement in Health Education. Connecticut is only one of fourteen states that don’t require students take health education prior to graduating. We are pleased that final legislation enacts a ½ credit health and wellness graduation requirement to be implemented in 2014. NARAL Pro-Choice Connecticut was also an active participant on the Everybody Benefits Coalition to pass Paid Sick Days legislation for hard working, primarily low-income women and men in Connecticut. Low income women in Connecticut experience significantly high numbers of low birth weight as a result of inadequate prenatal care. By offering women 5 paid sick days we can take one step closer to ensuring that women in Connecticut bear healthy children. Unfortunately, Paid Sick Days legislation did not pass this year. We look forward to continuing our efforts again next year. |
