Strong slate of pro-choice candidates heads toward November general election

NARAL Pro-Choice Connecticut PAC-endorsed candidates Kevin Lembo (State Comptroller) and Susana Vidan (State Representative, 144th district, Stamford) were victorious in yesterday’s state Democratic primaries, and they will head into the November general election as their party’s pro-choice candidates.

The landslide victory by Kevin Lembo over anti-choice Michael Jarjura in the bitterly contested State Comptroller Democratic primary is an extremely important win that brings us one step closer to ensuring that women's reproductive freedom in Connecticut is protected.  Lembo won by a margin of 79% to 21%.

Lembo’s victory was a key one, since the State Comptroller has responsibilities for purchasing health care for state workers, retirees, and their families, and could be called upon to assist in the negotiation of insurance plans that cover abortion, for example.

Cari Pierdes, NARAL Pro-Choice Connecticut PAC Chair, “Kevin Lembo is a long-time advocate of women’s health issues, and we are confident that his strong pro-choice views will ensure that women's reproductive insurance options and services are protected."

The PAC congratulates Dan Malloy, Nancy Wyman, and Denise Merrill in their primaries for Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and Secretary of State, respectively. Although NARAL Pro-Choice CT PAC did not endorse candidates in their races since all candidates were pro-choice, each candidate is a champion of womens' reproductive freedom and their victories ensure a strong slate of pro-choice candidates come the November 2nd general election.

Susana Vidan decisively won over John Zelinsky 917-516 in the Democratic primary in the 144th District; she seeks the seat vacated by Rep Jim Shapiro in Stamford. In other races, NARAL Pro-Choice CT PAC-endorsed candidate Ross Garber was defeated by anti-choice Martha Dean in the state’s Republican primary for Attorney General. Pro-choice Matt Ritter lost to Ken Green by a razor-thin margin in the race for State Representative in Hartford’s 1st District. (A recount is in process)

In September, NARAL Pro-Choice Connecticut PAC will publicize their full slate of endorsed candidates for the November general election. Check www.pro-choicect.orgfor details.
