WEST HARTFORD—NARAL Pro-Choice Connecticut PAC announced significant gains for women’s reproductive rights in the state after Tuesday’s general election. Seventy-three percent of PAC-endorsed candidates in the legislature were victorious, and all six of Connecticut’s newly elected Constitutional Officers are pro-choice: Dan Malloy (Governor), Nancy Wyman (Lieutenant Governor), George Jepsen (Attorney General), Denise Merrill (Secretary of State), Denise Nappier (Treasurer), and Kevin Lembo (Comptroller).

Connecticut is a beacon of light in the national movement for women’s reproductive freedom. Bucking national trends, Connecticut voters flatly refused to elect a single person to the upper echelons of state government who did not support a women’s right to choose” said Cari Pierdes, NARAL Pro-Choice Connecticut PAC Chair.

In even more good news for pro-choice advocates, Connecticut’s newly elected U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal is a dedicated supporter of women’s reproductive rights, and pro-choice Congressmen Jim Himes and Chris Murphy were re-elected.

“I congratulate the newly elected pro-choice legislators in Connecticut for unequivocally and publicly supporting a women’s right to choose during their campaigns.” said Pierdes. “No doubt about it: abortion was a central issue in several key races—including the Governor’s race. Voters have sent a clear message to their state leaders that abortion rights cannot be compromised.”

NARAL Pro-Choice Connecticut PAC-endorsed candidates were victorious in 47 out of 64 races (73%) while candidates endorsed by the state’s most virulently anti-choice state PAC were successful in only 55% of theirs.
